Augmentin: Drug Information For Patient
Augmentin Indications
Augmentin is used to counter bacterial infection in various parts of the body; it can also be used to treat dental abscesses and in preventing infection during surgery. It can be used to reduce bacterial infection in the skin.
Augmentin How It Works
Augmentin is a penicillin-type antibiotic. It works by interfering with the bacterial cell walls without these walls the bacterial cells cannot keep anything contained inside the cell as well as prevent things from coming inside the cell. Holes eventually appear in the bacterial cells and kill the bacteria. It also contains an ingredient which helps to neutralise penicillin resistance bacteria.
Augmentin Contraindications
Augmentin should not be taken if you have a history of liver problems or jaundice. If you have a history of allergic reactions to penicillin or cephalosporin-type medicines it should also be avoided. If you are allergic to any of the ingredients then you should consult a doctor before taking Augmentin.
Augmentin Interaction With Other Drugs
Augmentin may decrease the removal of methotrexate from the body, this will increase the risk of side effects from that drug, so if you taking any methotrexate you should consult a doctor. It has been found that Augmentin may affect anti-coagulant drugs so if you are taking any such medication you should consult your doctor.
Augmentin Side Effects
Medicines can affect people in different ways. The known side effects associated with Augmentin include: nausea, diarrhoea, indigestion and disorientation. Although this not a comprehensive list as the side effects may vary from person to person.
Augmentin Precautions
If you have a decreased kidney and/or liver function then you should consult your doctor before you take Augmentin. If you have a history of allergies then consultation is recommended. Augmentin also contains a source of phenylalanine because of this it may not be suitable for people who have a genetic disorder known as phenylketonuria. It is recommended that you take the full prescribed course of Augmentin given to you by your doctor before you stop taking it, even if you feel better and the infection has cleared up. Augmentin can cause jaundice for this reason the treatment should not exceed 14 days.
Augmentin Pregnancy And Breastfeeding
The affects on pregnancy are not yet known although it is believed to be safe to take while pregnant, although use of any medicine during pregnancy should be avoided unless your doctor agrees. Augmentin does pass into breast milk but at the normal dose it should not harm the baby, once again discuss this with your doctor.
