Lasix (Furosemide) Drug Information Online

FDA approved indications of Lasix are treating fluid retenion caused in heart failure and malfunction of several organs such as kidney, liver and lung. Like other diuretics, Lasix is commonely prescribed drug to treat high blood pressure (hypertention).

Lasix mainly works by removing excess water through urine.

Working Mechanism of Lasix

Excess level of fluid in blood makes difficult for heart to pump blood. Lasix works by increasing removal of salts (potassium and sodium) in kidney. This leads to removal of excess of retained water in blood and kidney. Water is finally eliminated through urine. Lower level of water in blood decreases the level of fluid circulating along with blood in vessels. This decreases the work load of heart in its pumping effort.

That is the reason Lasix is prescribed to patients whose heart is weaker after heart failure.

Apart from heart failure many other conditions leads to fluid retention. One of those disorders is oedema (edema). Prime goal of Lasix is to decrease work load of heart in patient with history of heart disease. Lasix also helps improve symptoms of short breath usually seen when fluid accumulates in lungs

Lasix is also prescribed when urine production is found less in patients with renal failure (kidney failure).

Other indications of Lasix are hypertension (blood pressure), liver dysfunction and poor blood circulation.

Lasix Dosage

Available doses of Lasix are 10mg and 40mg. It is recommended to consult physician to decide the dose.
