Carafate is a unique oral drug. Chemically it is combined with sulfate and aluminum and is a complex of the disaccharide sugar, sucrose. Carafate is used to heal the ulcers in the stomach and upper intestine.

How does Carafate work?
Carafate is not absorbed from the gut. Carafate forms a protective barrier over the ulcer by binding to the exudates produced from the ulcer site on the lining of the gut. This in turn protects the ulcer from stomach acid and digestive enzymes and gives it time to heal.

If you miss a dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. In case it is time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly dose. Avoid taking a double dose.
