Nexium: Drug Information For Patient
What Is Nexium?
Nexium is a set of tablets that are manufactured by AstraZeneca with the active ingredient Esomeprazole that is used in the treatment and prevention of Peptic ulcers and acid reflux.
Nexium Indications
Nexium is used for the treatment and prevention of Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and peptic ulcers that are related to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, also known as NSAIDs. It is also used along with antibiotics to eradicate Helicobacter pylori bacteria from the alimentary canal, which aids in the healing of peptic ulcers and the prevention of a recurrence. Nexium can also be administered if there is extreme emission of the acids within the stomach because of a tumour or an enlarged pancreas which is known as a Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Nexium How Does It Work?
The active ingredient in the Nexium tablets is a proton pump inhibitor type of drug that is aimed at decreasing the level of stomach acid that is produced in the stomach at any given time. The cells that line the stomach walls are generally equipped with attached proton pumps that the cells used to produce the stomach acid and the Esomeprazole that is found in nexium operates by stopping the pumps from working so that there is not so much stomach acid produced anymore.
Nexium Usage
Nexium tablets should be ingested completely intact and should not be broken, crushed or chewed before swallowing. However you may opt to dissolve it by stirring it into a glass of water. Take note that after the tablet is dissolved, the water will no longer be clear due to the pellets in the tablet that are solid and these pellets should also not be broken down any further by crushing or chewing as they specially coated to hold the medicine inside. The mixture should be consumed immediately after it has been mixed or within a half hour after it was mixed and must be stirred again before it is digested. If there are any residue left in the glass, add a little water and stir, then drink it to ensure that all of the tablet and its medicine is consumed.
Nexium Side Effects
The side effects that are associated with Nexium are: Headache, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, flatulence and abdominal pain.
Nexium Interaction With Other Drugs
Esomeprazole reduces the amount of atazanavir drug in the blood; therefore persons who are taking it for HIV infection should not take Nexium as it will reduce the effectiveness of the atazanavir. There are some medicines that the liver may have difficulty breaking down if Esomeprazole is being taken and thus increasing the level of their presence in the blood and in turn increasing the side effects that they may have. Some of these medications are: citalopram, clomipramine, diazepam, escitalopram, imipramine, phenytoin
