Acomplia Indications
Acomplia is used as an anti-obesity drug. It is typically prescribed to people who have a body mass index of 30kg/m or more, it can also be prescribed to those who are overweight and have type-2 diabetes.
Acomplia How It Works
Acomplia contains the active ingredient called rimonabant. The ingredient blocks the receptors in the brain that control energy balance, sugar and fat metabolism and body weight. It reduces the cravings for various types of fatty and sugary food thus helping in weight control.
Acomplia Contraindications
Acomplia has been banned in Europe due to various problems with the side effects. It should not be taken if you have a major depressive illness as the drug has been found to exasperate the illness. It should also not be taken if you have any liver or kidney problems or people who are lactose intolerant.
Acomplia Interactions With Other Drugs
Due to the problem with depression associated with Acomplia you should not take anti-depression medication while taking Acomplia. Certain medicines may also increase the side effects of taking Acomplia so it is advised not to use the following in conjunction with the following drugs: clarithromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, nefazondone, ritonavir and tilithromycin.
Acomplia Side Effects
Studies conducted in Europe during October 2008 found that Acomplia can cause significant psychiatric problems such as depression and attempts to control the effects failed so in Europe use of Acomplia has been suspended until further notice. Other side effects may include: nausea and general flu like symptoms, sleep disorders and dizziness although it does depend on the individual circumstances. Vomiting was also found to affect around ten percent of those who took Acomplia in medical trials of the drug.
Acomplia Precautions
Due to the suspension in Europe it is not recommended that you take Acomplia unless it has been prescribed by your doctor. If you have a history of depression or suicidal thoughts then Acomplia should only be used in extreme circumstances or if your doctor has prescribed it. People who have epilepsy should also use caution while taking Acomplia. Studies did not use those who had a history of heart attack or stroke so you should not use Acomplia if you have a history of either.
Acomplia Pregnancy And Breastfeeding
The affects of Acomplia on pregnancy is not yet known however it is not recommended that you use Acomplia unless you first consult your doctor. It is not known whether it can be absorbed into breast milk so nursing mothers should also avoid it unless your doctor agrees.
